T25: Barriers That Immigrant Women Face

Immigrant women and their children are often in desperate need of affordable housing when they try to rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse. However, they might experience challenges and barriers in accessing the system and also when trying to navigate the complex systems of self-governed affordable housing. The session aims to promote awareness of the challenges faced by immigrant women and their families in the affordable housing sector and to discuss possible solutions.

Panelists: Anna Foschi, Volunteers’ Coordinator, VLM Multicultural Family Support Services Society; Sherman Chan, MSc, RSW, Director of Settlement Services, MOSAIC; and Shabna Ali, Executive Director, BC Yukon Society of Transition Houses (Moderator)

T26: Tools and Tips for Non-Profits Working with Municipalities

Maybe you can’t fight city hall – but you can certainly learn how to work more effectively with it. In this session, two seasoned municipal planners will share their perspectives on what works, and what doesn’t for groups trying to work with their local municipalities in advancing affordable housing projects.

Panelists: John Foster, Social Planning Coordinator, City of Richmond; Cheryl Kathler, Community Planner, City of North Vancouver; and BCNPHA Certified Instructor Wayne Cybak, Administrator, Parkdale Place Housing Society (Moderator)

T27: It Takes a Sector To Raise a Home – Implementing Recommendations from the Development Consultant Sector Study

Over the past decade, the delivery of social housing in BC has become much more complex. The development consultant sector has always played a key role in the development process and last year, BC Housing retained Marleen Morris and Associates to study the impact of the changing delivery environment. Following the study’s recommendations, a collaborative process involving representatives from across the sector is underway to strengthen relationships and build the necessary capacity and sustainability for the continued delivery of community-based non-profit housing. This session will provide an update on this process.

Presenters: Craig Crawford, Vice President, Development Services, BC Housing; Marleen Morris, President, Marleen Morris & Associates; and Karen Stone, Executive Director, BC Non-Profit Housing Association (Moderator)

This session is sponsored by Terra Housing Consultants.

T28: Keeping Up Appearances – How to Make Your Property Look Great

This workshop is designed for anyone involved in maintaining the exterior of a property. Topics covered include: how to maintain curb appeal; scheduling exterior inspections; contracting out versus doing it yourself; purchasing equipment; and seasonal considerations. We’ll also talk about the importance of having a replacement reserve plan to prepare for the maintenance and replacement of “big-ticket” items, such as the roof, walking/driveway surfaces, exterior painting, or other structural components of the building.

Presenter: BCNPHA Certified Instructor Bill Todd

This session is sponsored by General Paint.

T29: Introduction to Social Enterprise

This is an introductory workshop for those interested in learning about the practical steps to establishing a social enterprise in British Columbia. Topics will include planning for success, sources of funding, legal and financial considerations, and a discussion of common pitfalls. This presentation will provide a base of knowledge for housing providers in British Columbia who are thinking of establishing a social enterprise.

Presenter: BCNPHA Certified Instructor Michael Litchfield, Management Consultant, Thinklab Consulting Inc, and Lawyer, Redwood Law Corporation

T30: Developing Housing with Your Equity

This panel of experts will share their experiences and successes in producing affordable housing outside of government subsidy programs. They bring three distinct perspectives based on experience in their individual contexts. Innovative financing, sweat equity, multiple partnerships, local government involvement, and community support all contribute to the success of their creative solutions. Discuss the perplexing problems of building “outside the box.”

Panelists: Barbara Bacon, Executive Director, HFBC Housing Foundation; Howard Johnson, Executive Director, Baptist Housing Society of BC; Bob Nicklin, CEO, Affordable Housing Societies; and David Eddy, Executive Director, Vancouver Native Housing Society (Moderator)

T31: Registration of Mental Health and Addictions Assisted Living Residences

In this session, the Registrar of Assisted Living will be speaking about the Mental Health and Addictions Assisted Living registration project presently being piloted in the Interior Health Authority. The Office of the Assisted Living Registrar has been working for well over a year to develop a framework to guide operators in the registration of mental health and support recovery homes. Susan Adams will give a history of the project, an update on where we stand presently, and she will discuss the implementation of the province-wide registration initiative for this sector.

Presenter: Susan Adams, Assisted Living Registrar, Office of the Assisted Living Registrar

T32: Welcome to Direct Requests – Getting an Order of Possession without a Hearing!

2009 marked the introduction of a new process at the Residential Tenancy Branch. Landlords with tenants who don’t pay the rent or utilities can now apply for a “Direct Request.” This process is an expedited means of obtaining an Order of Possession without a participatory hearing. This session will help you:

  • Understand the direct request process;
  • Learn how to submit a direct request; and
  • Understand how the process fits into the dispute-resolution system in general.

Presenter: Suzanne Bell, Executive Director, Residential Tenancy Branch; and a Representative of the RTB

T33: Aboriginal Housing and Health Care through Innovative Partnerships

Although housing and health care for Aboriginal people are located either on or off-reserve, funding sources are restricted depending on the location. Securing provincial support for Aboriginal people in the community where they prefer to live will result in only positive outcomes and can be most effectively completed through strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships. M’akola Housing Society has for many years advocated for these types of partnerships and has succeeded through a unique project with the Cowichan Tribes, BC Housing, and the Vancouver Island Health Authority. This presentation will address the legal and operational issues in making this project a reality and will focus on the steps undertaken, the partnerships established, the efforts expended, and the challenges encountered, but most importantly on what this project means for our future.

Presenter: Kevin A. Albers, CGA, CAFM, Chief Executive Officer, M’akola Group of Societies
