Topics covered include:

  • The fundamental principles and operating features of each of the models;
  • Policy manuals that exist with each model;
  • Codes of conduct and conflict-of-interest guidelines for senior staff and volunteers; and
  • Monitoring performance.

T22: Working with LGBT2S Tenants and Applicants

In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the unique challenges facing LGBT2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two spirit) communities and identify ways in which housing providers can set policies and practices that provide inclusive housing opportunities for these populations. Creating welcoming, respectful, and friendly environments for all of your tenants helps reduce overall conflict in your buildings, reducing complaints, turnover in your units, and work overall!

Presenters: Nikki Gravelle, Coordinator, SHARP Access Project, Prism Alcohol & Drug Services, Vancouver Coastal Health; Winston Thompson, Educator, SHARP Access Project, Prism Alcohol & Drug Services, Vancouver Coastal Health; and BCNPHA Certified Instructor Donna Sassaman, Coordinator, Society for Affordable Housing Education Awareness and Development (AHEAD)

T23: Exploring the Continuum of Housing Affordability – Applicability of Examples from Abroad

This session is intended for those interested in the broader issue of housing affordability in BC. The panel will explore various approaches to affordability of housing beyond traditional advocacy for more of the same. Attend this session to:

  • Expand your understanding of the concept and experiences of the continuum of housing affordability;
  • Think creatively about your organizational circumstances; and
  • Share what you’ve learned and develop a focused new approach to the provision of affordable housing.

Panelists: Jessica Averiss, Administrator, Whistler Housing Authority; Penny Gurstein, PhD, Director, School of Community and Regional Planning, UBC; Latosia Campbell, Graduate Student, SCARP – UBC; and Eva Wadolna, MA, Envisioning Retirement, Seniors’ Housing Consultant (Moderator)
