Presenter: BCNPHA Certified Instructor Don King, Certified Mediator, Consensus Consulting.
W10: Engaging the Generations
The Baby Boomers continue to delay retirement, Generation Xers are waiting their turn at formal leadership, and the gale force of the Millennial generation is here to stay. Given the recurring clashes between and among generations, the need to know and understand our co-workers has never been more important. Studies show that members from each generation value balance in their lives, trying new things, succeeding in the work they do, and looking for a place to connect. Join ‘Millennial’ Marie Chatterton as she shares her unique generational perspective to help bring awareness to leaders at all levels of organizations on how to create a successful and engaging environment, and to bring out the best from all generations. This session will explore the characteristics and communication styles of each generation and help participants learn how to create a successful working relationship with each generational group.
Presenter: Marie Chatterton, Principal, Mariechatterton.com.
This session is sponsored by Morneau Shepell and Green Shield Canada.
W11: Coaching and Mentoring for Tomorrow’s Success
The demographics speak for themselves – significant numbers of senior leaders in non-profit housing will be eligible for retirement over the next five to ten years. For the sector’s future health, it is imperative that organizations develop and implement comprehensive succession strategies to ensure that vacancies can be filled by qualified staff in a planned and strategic manner. Coaching and mentoring emerging leaders is a foundational part of any succession plan, as is elevating the organizational culture to be collaborative, resilient, and developmental through the upcoming leadership transitions. Coach-like leadership is a powerful approach to accelerate leadership development within organizations so they can be the best at retention, attraction, development of good people, and service delivery. This three-hour interactive and experiential workshop will develop current leaders’ coach-like leadership capacities so they can:
- identify and continuously develop emerging leaders;
- sustain environments of collaboration and cross-functional team cooperation to ensure their organizations’ continued successes; and
- work more powerfully together with their boards and key stakeholders as leadership teams.
Presenters: Mary Ellen Sanajko, Executive and Team Coach, Conduit Coaching Inc.; and Juhree Zimmerman, Executive and Team Coach, Strategy for Synergy.
This session is sponsored by QBE.
W12: Does Food Provision Equal Food Security in Social Housing?
Canada has recognized both food security and housing as important social determinants of health. Because both nutrition and housing are key components to health and well-being, they are also both keys to the health of tenants in social housing. This panel discussion will provide two perspectives of the debate on food security: Do existing food provision programs enable tenants to achieve food security? And, how can housing providers be involved in ensuring food security for their residents?
After the panel discussion, participants will be broken into focus groups to discuss food security and food provision in more depth. Participants will:
- gain a greater understanding of the issue of food security for tenants;
- identify barriers to food security for residents; and
- create strategies for addressing barriers.
Panelists: BCNPHA Certified Instructor Judy Walsh, PhD Student, University of Victoria, and Tenant Support Worker, Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society; Judy Graves, Coordinator Tenant Assistance Program, City of Vancouver; Christiana Miewald, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Centre for Sustainable Community Development, SFU; Ian Munro, Housing Assistant Manager, Victoria Cool Aid Society; Claire Gram, Policy Analyst, Vancouver Coastal Health; and Jim Spinelli, Executive Director, Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society (Moderator).
