bullet John Carver
Carver introduced a radical and controversial new governance model for non-profit organizations in his 1990 book, Boards That Make a Difference. This model requires that the organization have a developed staff infrastructure and definitely a highly competent executive director, since the emphasis is on delegation to the latter. Carver’s 1997 book, Reinventing Your Board, is a guide to implementing the policy governance model. While Carver recommends against this, some boards have successfully adapted aspects of the policy governance model to suit their needs.
